Qatar University (QU) hosts the National Sport Day 2021 event, coinciding with the national celebration, which falls on the second Tuesday every February annually. The event aims to enhance community member awareness of the importance of sport and its impact on an individual’s life. This year, QU celebrates this occasion under the slogan ‘Sport Unites Us’ virtually via the Webex platform as part of the precautionary measures for the Covid-19 pandemic.

In his statement on the occasion, Dr. Hassan Al-Derham, President of QU said, “National Sports Day is a significant national occasion, in which we spotlight activities that enrich Qatari society in terms of sports, health and social development. The University recognizes the importance of this national event since its launch and has organized a number of activities to encourage an interactive, active and healthy community.”

Dr. Hassan added: “The State of Qatar, which is about to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has provided all means of practicing sport of various kinds, through the stadiums equipped according to the best international standards, public squares for practicing sports, and other modern equipment.” Dr. Hassan urged university employees and community members to practice sports regularly and at all times of the year to make it a way of life.

In her speech on occasion, Asma Al-Nuaimi, Director of the Sports Affairs Department said: “We are delighted with the enthusiasm that we find from all segments of society regarding Sports Day. Celebrating this day on the state level has created a sport culture among the community, as we have seen with university students and staff. Without neglecting precautionary measures, we have organized various events to commemorate this day and to preserve the health of the community.”

Dr. Eiman Mustafawi, Vice-President for Student Affairs, QU, stressed the importance celebrating this day annually, emphasizing the state’s concern for the health of citizens and residents and its tireless efforts to serve the community by providing sports facilities that enable everyone to exercise safely.

The Sports Day activities at QU includes many sports activities coached by professionals in sports and targeting both females and males. Activities include aerobics, yoga and resistance training, among many others.
